A Strong Road Safety Message to Young Men

Young male drivers are being reminded of the stark fact that more young females die as passengers than as drivers. It's part of the controversial award-winning "For my girlfriend" road safety campaign for young drivers.

The stark message of the campaign confronts young male drivers with the appalling prospect of killing their girlfriend while driving too fast.

Posters carry the message "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to kill you," accompanied by a picture of a girl in a crashed car surrounded by the emergency services.

A card with a similar hard-hitting message is being distributed with the help of sixth-form centres, colleges, universities, nightclubs, pubs, leisure centres and major employers.

Liberal Democrat Councillor Graham Mabbutt, Milton Keynes Council's cabinet member responsible for transport, said: "Young drivers are particularly tough to get road safety messages to. The card has been tested among young people and, while they didn't like it, they admitted it had impact and made them think."
