New Hazeley Secondary School Officially Opened by Johnny Ball

12.00.00am GMT Mon 13th Feb 2006

Presenter Johnny Ball formally declared the new Hazeley School open on Thursday 9th February.

Johnny Ball has a passion for education and has popularised science and mathematics for young people with his television shows for many years.

Headteacher Iain Denning said: "We want our pupils to take an active part in the life of our school and in their learning and so it was only natural that they should lead the celebrations of our official opening."

The £13m first phase of this new school for students aged 11 to 19 opened its doors to pupils last September. A further phase will follow in 2007 and the school will be completed by 2010. Among the guests attending the official opening were councillors Euan Henderson and Sandra Clark, school governors, senior officers from the Council and pupils from Oxley Park, Christ the Sower, Oakgrove and Leon Schools.

Commenting on the new school, Euan Henderson, Liberal Democrat cabinet member responsible for Milton Keynes Council's school building programme, said: "This splendid new school will provide excellent educational opportunities for many thousands of young people on the west flank of Milton Keynes.

"It has a superb range of facilities for both students and the wider community. The first phase includes a mix of spacious and flexible ICT-rich teaching spaces, including specialist facilities for science and technology, a large sports hall, an assembly hall, an independent learning centre, a library, and a bright and airy dining area with lovely views across the city."
