Milton Keynes Council to Crack Down on Flyposting

10.02.40pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 10th Apr 2006

Traders who put up fly-posters and placards will facer tougher penalties from this month.

Milton Keynes Council is taking advantage of no-nonsense new powers from the beginning of this month to issue fixed penalties to offenders.

Under the Clean Neighbourhood and Environment Act 2005, flyposters and other unauthorised adverts will be subject to a fixed penalty fine of £75 per illegal sign. Enforcement officers of the Council's Safer Communities Unit are gearing themselves to take action throughout the Borough.

Liberal Democrat Councillor Douglas McCall, cabinet member for the environment, said: "We are determined to take advantage of this new legislation to stamp out fly-posting in Milton Keynes. These posters are an eyesore, and often eventually end up on the ground as litter.

"Over the coming weeks our enforcement officers will be removing signs and issuing fixed penalty notices to those who advertise without the proper consent. Individuals and businesses should remove immediately any advertising signs that they've put up without permission."
